How to Interview for a Six Figure Job in any Economic Environment
The entire article is available on Associated Content.
If you are looking for a job in this uncertain economic environment, it is critical that you are always bringing your A-game to the interviews. Let’s go over the time-tested SMART interview strategy step by step. You will be well on your way to your six-figure job.
S – Subject Matter Expertise: You are being hired for a specific job function, and your skills will be evaluated at the interview. Know the job requirements and brush up on your knowledge. A world class performance often takes weeks or months of preparation; you should approach a job interview in the same manner.
M – Market Research: Learn everything you can about the company and the industry it is in. Jot down insightful questions that you want to ask the interviewers. Remember an interview is really an opportunity when the company evaluates a candidate and vice versa.
A – Arrive Prepared: Preferably you have already asked the interviewer about the dress code. When unsure, always err on the side of over-dressing; it is far easier to joke your way out of it. Bring 4-5 copies of your resume. The interviewers may not always have an opportunity to pre-print it. Arrive 20 minutes before the scheduled time. Use the spare time to collect yourself.
R – Rapport: This aspect of interviewing is often overlooked by job seekers. Understandably, you may be feeling the butterflies (or wired up from the 4th cup of coffee). Calm yourself. Intently listen to what the interviewers are asking you. Provide intelligent and concise answers. Mirror their energy level and body language but do not overdo it. The objective is to prove you will be able to fit in. Toward the end of the interview, ask those insightful questions collected from Step 2.
T – Thank You Note: Always send a thank you note within one business day. Instead of using a run-of-the-mill boilerplate, use this correspondence to reiterate your interests in the position, supplement your answers during the interview, or even ask follow-up questions.
